Painting the Jamaica Inn, Bangor: Colour, Place, and Coastal Moments
The Jamaica Inn is one of Bangor’s most recognisable and well-loved coastal landmarks, known not only for its distinctive setting but also for its tasty, well-loved food. With sweeping views across Belfast Lough and located just a short distance from Ballyholme Beach, it holds a familiar and cherished place for both locals and visitors. Shaped by sea air, shifting light, and the constant movement of the Irish Sea, it was this strong sense of place and atmosphere that first inspired me to paint it.
What drew me in was not just the Victorian building itself, but how naturally it belongs within its surroundings. The Jamaica Inn feels anchored to the coastline, standing quietly against changing weather and tide. On the day I painted it, the sea was alive with movement, the sky open and bright, and the colours constantly shifting. I wanted the painting to reflect that living energy rather than offer a strict or literal representation.
